The prisoners of La Joya and La Joyita present this letter via the Internet, addressed to the President of the Republic, with the hopes that he pay more attention to the severe problem of the panamanian jails.
Mr.President,
We are the inmates of La Joya and La Joyita and we want to trust you.
You carry an important last name, and after your election, we thought you were the man of destiny, the man who can transform Panama from, "banana republic" to a first world country. Also because globalization requieres it and time is running out.
The respect of Human and Civilian Rights are a part of this game.
We have started a battle on the Internet, not with weapons, but with ideas, ideas of real justice, and we want you to be the principal actor.
It is very certain that you do not know that in the 270 square meter pavillions there are more than 300 persons living in there, less than 1 square meter per capita; that the is a clinic, but the doctor is not to be found; that the wounded and sick are moved about in hand cart like sacks of cement; that the ambulance is used to ferry potatoes and yams; that the police gases the pavillions while the the gates locked and much more.
Pero it is almost certain that you know that the prosecutors have a power topped only by God; that there is not end to preventative incarceration; that there are people who have been jailed for more than 5 years waiting for trial; that nobody reads a case file over 50 pages long; that parole is not a right of the inmate but of a capricious prosecutor; that due to faults in the law, lawyers, almost all of them, are always trying to keep the inmates incarcerated to get more money from them; that more prisoners means more business, just with La Joya kiosks alone somebody pockets almost $2,000,000 per year, clean and tax-free money.
